  • After the Second World War, following the Bretton Woods agreement, the French Franc lost much of its value in several devaluations.
  • In 1958, 100 Old French Francs became 1 Nouveaux Franc (New Franc).
  • The banknotes pictured above are the last banknotes of the Old French Franc type. We accept them for exchange at the rate specified above.
  • The portraits on these notes are famous French artists, statesmen and scientists.
     
    • on the 500 cinc cents francs banknote: Victor Hugo, poet, dramatist and novelist, along with the Panthéon in Paris
    • on the 1000 mille francs banknote: Armand du Plessis, also known as Cardinal Richelieu along with the Palais Cardinal
    • on the 5000 cinq mille francs note: Henry IV, King of France, along with Pont Neuf bridge in Paris and chateau Pau on the back
    • on the 10000 dix mille francs banknote: Napoléon Bonaparte, emperor of the French, along with the Arc de Triomphe in Paris
    • on the 50000 cinquante mille francs banknote: Jean Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Molière, along with the Palais Royal theater in Paris on the front and the theater in Versailles on the back
       
  • These Banque de France notes were withdrawn in 1958. They lost their legal tender value in 2002, when France adopted the Euro as its currency.

  • These banknotes were issued shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1945.
  • The portraits on these notes are famous French artists, statesmen, scientists and allegorical figures.

    • on the 100 cent french francs note: Young farmer (jeune paysan) with two oxen, woman, man and children at dockside on back
    • on the 500 cinq cents french francs note: François-René de Chateaubriand, writer, historian, diplomat and politician
    • on the 1000 mille french francs note: Two allegorical figures, Minerva and Hercules on the front, woman on back
    • on the 5000 cinq mille french francs note: Two allegorical figures, Sea and Countryside (Terre et Mer), Mercury and woman on back

  • These Banque de France bills were withdrawn from circulation in the 1950s and lost their legal tender value in 2002.

World War II: Allied Military Currency (1944)

  • These bills are technically not French Francs: They are AM-Francs, AM standing for Allied Military, issued during World War II.
  • The Allied Military currency was issued by the Allied Military Government for Occupied Territories.
  • These AM-Franc banknotes were issued shortly after the Battle of Normandy in 1944, by the United States.
  • The US Occuptian Francs quickly lost their value: The Provisional Government of the French Republic considered them as counterfeit money.
  • There are two versions of these banknotes:
     
    • 1944 First Issue - Billet Drapeau: Backside with Tricolor French flag
    • 1944 Second Issue - Verso France: Backside with the word France
       
  • They exist in various denominations: 2 deux francs, 5 cinq francs, 10 dix francs, 50 cinquante francs, 100 cent francs, 500 cinq cent francs, 1000 mille francs and 5000 cinq mille francs. The lower denominations are almost square notes (67mm x 78mm).
  • These Allied Military banknotes contain the text "Émis en France", "série de 1944" and the French motto "Liberté, égalité, fraternité"
  • These AM-Franc notes were never accepted for exchange by the Banque de France.

World War II: Republique Française Trésor Central - Government notes "type Marianne" 1943 - 1946

  • These banknotes are French treasury bills (Billets du Trésor), printed in London in 1943 and 1944 during World War II.
  • The banknotes issued by the Trésor Central were meant to replace the Banque de France notes in liberated territories.
  • On the banknotes is the portrait of Marianne, symbol of the French Republic.
  • When the island of Corsica was liberated in 1943, the 100 Francs Marianne banknote replaced all Banque de France notes of 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 francs. The 100 French Franc note with the image of Marianne is also known as the Corse Libre (free Corsica) banknote.
  • Government notes of the Marianne type have the following features:

     
    • Front: Portrait of Marianne, text "Republique Française" and "Tresor Central"
    • Back: Image of anchor, barrel and bale, the French motto "Liberté Egalité Fraternité"

       
  • The 500 Franc and 1000 Franc Trésor Central banknotes were put into circulation from 4 June 1945 onwards, in metropolitan France only.
  • They replaced all Banque de France notes with denominations of 50 Francs and higher.
  • The 500 and 1000 Franc notes were widely counterfeited. For this reason, the Trésor Central notes were withdrawn from circulation in July 1946.
