At Leftover Currency, we help people turn leftover banknotes and coins into cash. We handle and process large volumes of coins on a daily basis, and we often come across currency in a variety of conditions.
Sometimes coins are damaged, and these can’t be processed in the normal way. In this guide, we walk you through what damaged coins look like and why condition matters. We’ll also explain why some coins cannot be exchanged.
What is considered a damaged coin?
If a coin is bent, heavily corroded, has holes or extremely worn, banks will not put it back into circulation. That means we cannot exchange it for usable cash.
Coins taken from fountains often suffer the most. Water exposure can weaken the metal and leave deep corrosion and discolouration.

Can I exchange damaged coins with Leftover Currency?
The short answer is no, as damaged coins harm our processing machines. Our team checks each batch carefully before it enters our counting machines. Our equipment works at speed and needs coins to meet clear standards. When coins arrive in poor condition, they can damage the machines and slow the process down.
To keep our service smooth and reliable, we only accept coins in good, processable condition. If you are unsure about your coins, get in touch with our team, and we’ll be more than happy to assist.
What counts as a good condition for coins?
Here’s what we mean by “good condition”:
- Flat and even: The coin should not be bent or warped. It must sit flat on a table.
- No deep rust or corrosion: Light tarnish is fine, but heavy pitting or flaking metal is not.
- No holes or splits: Coins with drilled holes or cracks cannot be processed.
- Clear design and lettering: The date, value, and main design should still be visible.
- Normal wear only: Small scratches from everyday use are fine. Excessive smoothing or thinning is not.
