Ethiopia’s currency is the Ethiopian Birr, with currency code ETB. The Birr was first introduced in 1893, replacing the Maria Theresa Thaler as the official currency of the country in the Horn of Africa.
During the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, in the 1930s and 1940s, the Italian lira was introduced alongside the Birr. However, the Birr was reinstated as the sole legal tender after Ethiopia regained its independence in 1945.
