50,000 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Câmara Cascudo)

The Banco Central Do Brasil issued Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 10 different denominations, including this 50,000 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Câmara Cascudo). They are part of the Brazilian Third Cruzeiros banknotes series. The Banco Central Do Brasil started issuing these 50000 Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 1992. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1994.

The loss of purchasing power of the Cruzeiro in the early 1990’s meant that ever higher denomination banknotes had to be issued by the Banco Central Do Brasil. The 50,000 Cruzeiros bill was one of the higher denomination banknotes issued in 1992. It was cancelled in 1993 already when three zeroes were dropped from Brazil’s banknotes. The 50,000 Cruzeiros notes were converted into 50 Cruzeiros Reais, the new value indicated with a stamp. The portrait on the banknote is that of anthropologist Luis de Câmara Cascudo. On the back side of the Cr$ 50,000 bill is an image of Bumba Meu Boi, a traditional folklore festival in Brazil.
