The Casa da Moeda do Brasil issued Brazilian Real coins in 6 different denominations,
including this Brazil 1 Centavo coin. They are part of the Brazilian Real and Centavos coins series. The Casa da Moeda do Brasil started issuing
these 0.01 Brazilian Real coins in 1998. They are currently still in circulation.
This small 1 centavo copper-coloured coin from Brazil shows the Pedro Álvares Cabral, who led the Portugese fleet that claimed the area now known as Brazil for the Portugese colonial empire in 1500. The 5 star pattern on the other side of the coin, which is on all current Brazilian coins (except commemorative issues), represents the Southern Cross constellation. These stars are prominent in the night sky in the Southern Hemisphere, and feature on the national flags of not only Brazil, but also Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and Papua New Guinea. The value of a 1 centavo coin is the equivalent of 0.01 real. It is the smallest coin denomination in Brazil.
