10000 Zambian Kwacha banknote (Porcupine)

The Bank of Zambia issued Zambian kwacha banknotes in 14 different denominations, including this 10000 Zambian Kwacha banknote (Porcupine). They are part of the demonetised Zambian Kwacha banknotes series. The Bank of Zambia started issuing these 10000 Zambian kwacha banknotes in 1992. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2013.

The banknote of 10,000 Kwacha was Zambia’s highest value banknote until 2003, when higher denomination were introduced following very high inflation. The loss in value of the Zambian Kwacha triggered a redenomination of the currency in 2013. The 10,000 ZMK (old kwacha) banknote was replaced by a similarly designed 10 ZMW (new kwacha) banknote. The obverse side is dated 1992, 2001, 2003 or 2006. The reverse side of the note features farmers harvesting rice crops in a paddy field, a porcupine and the Freedom Statue in Zambia’s capital city Lusaka.
