The official currency of Honduras is the Honduran lempira, which uses the currency code HNL. The Central Bank of Honduras manages and issues the country’s banknotes and coins.
The lempira takes its name from a 16th-century Indigenous leader who resisted Spanish rule. Honduras introduced the currency into circulation during the 1930s, replacing the Honduran peso.
