Malawi’s official currency is the Malawian kwacha, which uses the currency code MWK. The Reserve Bank of Malawi is responsible for issuing and managing the country’s banknotes and coins.

The kwacha entered circulation in 1971 and replaced the Malawian pound. Its name comes from a Chichewa word meaning “dawn”, reflecting a new beginning following Malawi’s independence.
