The Irish Pound was the currency of the Republic of Ireland until 2002, when it was replaced by the Euro. Irish Pounds, or Punts Éireannach, were introduced as early as the year 997. One Irish pound was the amount of silver that could be coined into 240 pennies. The figure 240 was based on the value of the Ancient Roman denarius, worth one two-hundred-and-fortieth of a libra.
