The Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois issued Luxembourgish Franc coins in 6 different denominations, including this Luxembourg 5 francs coin. They are part of the Luxembourgish Franc coins series. The Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois started issuing these 5 Luxembourgish Franc coins in 1971. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2001.

Three types exist of the 5 Luxembourgish francs coin, all three of which feature the portrait of Grand Duke Jean and the text ‘5F’ under a crown. Coins issued from 1971 to 1981 are silver-coloured, made of cupronickel. 5F coins issued from 1986 to 1988 are gold-coloured and made of bronze. 5F coins issued from 1989 are also gold-coloured and are made of aluminium-brass. The older two types feature two oak branches in the design of the reverse side. The newer version coins feature the word ‘LËTZEBUERG’.
