The Maltese Lira was the currency of the Republic of Malta from 1972 until 2008, when it was replaced by the Euro. The Lira is closely related to the British currency unit Pound, which was the currency of Malta from 1825 until 1972. The English pound was a unit of weight, initially equated with the Ancient Roman weight called ‘libra’, which explains why the monetary unit in English is still ‘£’, the letter ‘L’ as the initial of libra.
