They were withdrawn from circulation in 1967.

Dom Diniz, in English known as ‘Denis of Portugal’, the ‘Farmer King’ or the ‘Poet King’, is shown on the front side of the Mil Escudos Ouro banknote. Dated 1965, the back of the 1000 escudos note shows a scene of the founding of the University of Lisbon in 1290.
