The Bank of Korea issued South Korean Won banknotes in 11 different denominations,
including this 5000 South Korean won banknote (Ojukheon House). They are part of the withdrawn South Korean Won banknotes series. The Bank of Korea started issuing
these 5000 South Korean Won banknotes in 1983. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2006.
This old type 5,000 won South Korean banknote depicts Yi l,one of the most prominent Confucian scholars from the Joseon Dynasty, who is also known by his pen name ‘Yulgok’. The reverse of the 5000 Korean Won note shows Ojukheon, the house where Yi l was born, and home to his mother Shin Saimdang, also an acclainmed Confucian practitioner.
