The Royal Mint issued British Pound coins in 16 different denominations,
including this British cartwheel penny. They are part of the predecimal and withdrawn Pound Sterling coins series. The Royal Mint started issuing
these 0.004167 British Pound coins in 1797. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1825.
Cartwheel pennies are private issue coins, minted by the British industrialist Matthew Boulton. They weren’t backed by a government but they contained their face value in copper. As a result these penny coins are large and very heavy, an impressive 28.3 grams! For this reason the Matthew Boulton copper pennies were known as ‘cartwheel pennies’.
