British predecimal sixpence coin
The Royal Mint issued British Pound coins in 16 different denominations, including this British predecimal sixpence coin. They are part of the predecimal and withdrawn Pound Sterling coins series. The Royal Mint started issuing these 0.025 British Pound coins in 1816. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1970.
The predecimal coin of six pence was smaller than the threepence coin, but double its value. A sixpence is the equivalent of 1/40 of a Pound Sterling. The sixpence coin was also called a ‘tanner’. The 6d piece weighs 2.83 grams and measures 19.41mm across. It was the lightest and smallest of the pre-decimal coins in use after WWII. The cupronickel sixpence coin has a floral design and a portrait of the Monarch (King George VI or Queen Elizabeth II). For Valentine’s Day, crooked sixpence coins are sometimes used as a love token.
