The old 5,000 Chilean Pesos note is fondly known as a ‘gabriela’. It has a portrait of the Chilean writer and educator Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, who was better known by her nom de plume Gabriela Mistral. Mistral was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945, becoming the first Latin American writer to achieve this acolade. The scene on the reverse of the banknote, of a female figure playing the lyre as a male looks up from his writing, is taken from the design on the gold medal awarded to recipients of the Nobel Literature prize.
