The large style 50c coin used to be the largest denomination of coins in New Zealand, until the introduction of $1 and $2 NZD coins in 1991. The large 50 cent coins were replaced by smaller and lighter coins with the same design, which features the sailing ship Endeavour and Mount Taranaki in the distance. The large 50 cent coin weighs 13.61 grams and has a diameter of 31.75mm.
