They are part of the withdrawn Sri Lankan Rupees banknotes series. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka started issuing these 50 Sri Lankan Rupee banknotes in 1969. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1977.

The Rs50 bill from the Bank of Ceylon shows a statue of King Parakramabahu I on the front and moonstone stairwell to Queens Paviion in the ancient city of Anuradhapura on the back side. Carved into the moonstone are animal designs including elephants, horses, lions, bulls and swans.
