Issued by the Abuja-based Central Bank of Nigeria, the current set of Nigerian Naira banknotes was introduced in 1999. Initially all NGN banknotes were made of paper.
To lengthen the lifetime of the banknotes, the ₦5, ₦10, ₦20 and ₦50 bills were introduced as polymer banknotes, replacing the older paper versions. The ₦100, ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000 notes remain made of paper.
