The Banco de Mexico issued Mexican Peso banknotes in 7 different denominations,
including this 500 Mexican Pesos banknote (Series D). They are part of the withdrawn Mexican Peso banknotes series. The Banco de Mexico started issuing
these 500 Mexican Peso banknotes in 1995. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2002.
The 500 Mexican pesos banknote depicts a scene from the Battle of Puebla in 1862 where the invading French forces were defeated by General Ignacio Zaragoza, whose portrait also featres on the front of the note. This victory is celebrated on 5th May every year in Puebla as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla. The reverse of the note shows Puebla Cathedral, which began construction in 1575 but was not completed until 1690.
