Mexico suffered from a period of high inflation, following the oil crisis of the 1970’s. As a result the Mexican Peso lost most of its purchasing power and ever higher denominations had to be issued, with prices going up rapidly. In 1993, the Bank of Mexico introduced a new currency, the ‘Nuevo Peso’, and dropped three zeroes from its banknotes. The Nuevo (new) Peso replaced the Old Peso at a rate of $1000 old pesos for $1 new peso.
The pre-1993 Mexican Peso banknotes belong to the obsolete Old Mexican Peso (MXP) and their value is 1/1000 of today’s New Peso (MXN). At Leftover Currency we continue to exchange the obsolete old Mexican Peso banknotes. In addition we also exchange current Mexican Peso banknotes, previous series New Peso banknotes and Mexican Peso and Centavo coins.
