1,000 Israeli Old Shekel banknote (1978 to 1984 issue)
The Bank of Israel issued Israeli Old Shekel banknotes in 9 different denominations, including this 1,000 Israeli Old Shekel banknote (1978 to 1984 issue). They are part of the obsolete Israeli Old Shekel banknotes series. The Bank of Israel started issuing these 1000 Israeli Old Shekel banknotes in 1983. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1985.
Israel replaced this banknote of 1000 Old Shekels with a note of 1 New Shekel, dropping three zeroes. This was a result of hyperinflation in Israel in the mid-1980’s. Both the Old Shekel and New Shekel banknote feature the portrait of Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, also known as Maimonides. On the back side of the 1000 ILR bill is a view on the Tomb of Maimonides in Tiberias.
