The Old Israeli Shekel (ILR) was Israel’s national currency from 1980 until 1985. It was replaced by the New Israeli Shekel (ILS) at a rate of 1000 old shekel to 1 new shekel. The oldest ILR banknotes are dated 1978 but they only entered circulation in 1980.
The highest denomination banknotes of the Old Israeli Shekel, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Sheqalim were replaced by new shekel banknotes with three zeroes less. The banknotes of 500 old sheqalim and less were replaced by coins.
