They are part of the withdrawn Nigerian Naira banknotes series. The Central Bank of Nigeria started issuing these 5 Nigerian Naira banknotes in 1979. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2009.

The green-coloured 1979 version of Nigeria’s 5 Naira banknote has the same design as the 1984 version except for the colour. The portrait is that of Nigeria’s former PM Tafawa Balewa. The back side shows bàtá drummers of the Yorùbá.
