1,000 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Pedro Álvares Cabral blue type)

The Banco Central do Brasil issued Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 13 different denominations, including this 1,000 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Pedro Álvares Cabral blue type). They are part of the Brazilian First Cruzeiros banknotes series. The Banco Central do Brasil started issuing these 1000 Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 1961. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1970.

This blue-coloured banknote of 1000 Mil Cruzeiros from 1961 has the portrait of Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral, who discovered Brazil in 1500 and claimed it for Portugal. On the back side is a scene showing the first Catholic mass in Brazil. It’s a reproduction from the painting “Primeira Missa” by romantic Brazilian painter Victor Meirelles. Two versions of the 1000 Brazilian Cruzeiros note exist: This blue version made by the American Bank Note Company, and an orange coloured version, made by Thomas de la Rue & Company Limited.
