500 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Dom João VI olive type)

The Banco Central do Brasil issued Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 13 different denominations, including this 500 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Dom João VI olive type). They are part of the Brazilian First Cruzeiros banknotes series. The Banco Central do Brasil started issuing these 500 Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 1955. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1970.

Dom Joao IV, King of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, is featured on this olive coloured banknote of 500 Brazilian Cruzeiros from 1955. The back side has the text “Abertura Dos Portos”, which refers to the Decree of Opening Ports to Friendly Nations, signed by Dom Joao VI in 1808 in Salvador. This olive-coloured version was printed by Thomas de la Rue Company Limited. A similar blue-coloured version of this banknote was made in 1961 by the American Bank Note Company.
