500 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Dom João VI blue type)

The Banco Central do Brasil issued Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 13 different denominations, including this 500 Brazilian Cruzeiros banknote (Dom João VI blue type). They are part of the Brazilian First Cruzeiros banknotes series. The Banco Central do Brasil started issuing these 500 Brazilian Cruzeiro banknotes in 1961. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1970.

The portrait on the 500 Quinhentos Cruzeiros banknote from 1961 is that of John VI of Portugal, Dom João VI. He was Prince-Regent in Brazil. In 1808 he signed the Decree of Opening Ports to Friendly Nations (Abertura Dos Portos), seen as the first step in the Brazilian Independence process. This decree is featured on the back side of the 500 Cruzeiros bill. This blue-coloured banknote was printed by the American Bank Note Company. An olive coloured 500 cruzeiros bill with the same design was printed by Thomas de la Rue Company Limited in 1955.
